Baltistan is the big, quiet side of the north. Sand dunes at 2,200 metres, restored royal forts you can sleep in, and Deosai, a plateau so high and wide it feels like another planet. This journey mixes slow mornings by the lakes with one proper adventure: a night under canvas on the plains, no phone signal, a bonfire and more stars than sky.

02 /Day by day
Skardu, Khaplu & Deosai
Day 1Fly to Skardu+
One of the great flights on earth, past Nanga Parbat on a clear day. Afternoon by Shangrila and Lower Kachura lake.
Day 2Upper Kachura & the cold desert+
Row out on Upper Kachura in the morning, then catch sunset on the Katpana dunes.
Day 3Shigar+
Orchards, a 400-year-old mosque and a night in the restored Shigar Fort.
Day 4Along the Shyok to Khaplu+
A beautiful river drive east to Khaplu Palace and the old Chaqchan mosque.
Day 5Hushe valley+
A gentle walk towards Hushe for big views of Masherbrum, lunch in a village home.
Day 6Up to Deosai+
Climb onto the plains, look for marmots and brown bears, then camp by Sheosar lake with a bonfire and BBQ.
Day 7Sunrise and back to Skardu+
Chai as the sun hits the lake, then down to Skardu for a long farewell dinner.
Day 8Fly home+
Morning flight to Islamabad. Outside Deosai season we swap the camp for Satpara lake and Manthokha waterfall.
