01 /The journey
The Kalash are a small community with their own language, gods and festivals, living in three narrow valleys near the Afghan border. We visit with Kalash hosts, stay in family guesthouses and move slowly and respectfully. If you can, come for a festival: the valleys fill with music and colour.

The Kalash Valleys
Day 1Fly to Chitral, drive to Bumburet+
A short flight, then a winding road into the largest Kalash valley.
Day 2Bumburet+
The Kalasha Dur museum, village walks and dinner with your host family.
Day 3Rumbur+
The quietest and most traditional valley, walked with a local guide.
Day 4Birir+
Grape and walnut country, and the quietest of the three valleys.
Day 5Back to Chitral+
Chitral Fort, the Shahi mosque and the bazaar.
Day 6Fly home+
Morning flight to Islamabad. Please always ask before photographing Kalash women.
